B12 is a water-soluble vitamin which is required for the formation of blood and the normal function of the brain and nervous systems. Vitamin B12 is required for the synthesis of haemoglobin, the oxygen carrying pigment in red blood cells. It is only found in animal derived foods - so taking it as a supplement is particularly recommended for vegetarians and vegans. The elderly are also vulnerable to B12 deficiency, due to their decreased secretion of intrinsic factor - which is required for vitamin B12 absorption. Suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
